Self-hosted dbt UI and dbt Cloud alternative

dbt-Workbench is an open source, self-hosted dbt control plane for teams that need operational dbt workflows inside their own infrastructure. It combines lineage, run orchestration, scheduling, catalog, docs previews, SQL exploration, and optional RBAC.

When to evaluate it

  • Your team needs more than static dbt docs output.
  • Data workflows must remain local, on-prem, or air-gapped.
  • You want to keep execution and artifacts inside your network.
  • Per-seat, per-run, or managed-service costs need a second option.
  • Platform engineers need a repeatable dbt workspace for multiple teams.

Evaluation path

  1. Run the Docker quickstart.
  2. Inspect model and column lineage and catalog workflows.
  3. Launch a run using run orchestration and inspect artifacts.
  4. Configure scheduling and run history.
  5. Review authentication and RBAC before a team evaluation.
  6. Test air-gapped deployment if network isolation is a requirement.

Set expectations

This is an open-source project, not a claim of feature parity with every managed dbt platform. Validate adapter support, operational ownership, upgrade procedures, and security requirements in your own environment before production adoption. The architecture guide, roadmap, and contribution guide make those tradeoffs visible.
